Society has taught us that we are supposed to be aware of others and their feelings and take care of others before we take care of ourselves. Guilt can set in when we do something for ourselves. Then, if we do choose to do something for ourselves we feel uncomfortable because we have needs. It isn’t selfish to take care of the self before others. It is important to feel good and balanced instead of running yourself ragged to help others first. You will feel better when you spend some time on you and that will help you to help others. Being relaxed and feeling good, when helping others, is the best way to help and give and in order to feel good and relaxed you must take care of you…first.
It can be easy to get caught up in helping others without thinking twice about helping yourself. But think about what they say in an airplane before take off, “In the event of an emergency, put on your oxygen mask FIRST and then put one on your child.” You know why, don’t you? Because what good will you be to help your child if you are incapacitated? Take care of you first my friend. It’s not selfish, it is necessary.
